Rev. James Platania, S.S.L., S.Th.D.

Catholic Priest · Biblical Scholar · Professor

James Platania teaches in the Core Curriculum at Seton Hall University. Since August 2024, he has taught Journey of Transformation to first-year students and Christianity and Culture in Dialogue to second-year students. These courses bring biblical texts into conversation with philosophy, literature, and the Catholic intellectual tradition, with particular attention to questions of human formation and transformation.

His earlier teaching focused on biblical studies. As Assistant Professor of Biblical Studies at Immaculate Conception Seminary School of Theology at Seton Hall University, he taught the Pentateuch, prophetic literature, the spirituality of the Old Testament, Biblical Hebrew, Biblical Greek, and One Bible, Two Testaments, a course of his own design.

His teaching has also extended beyond the university classroom through retreats, lectures, and guided visits for parish and student groups in the Tri-State area, Jerusalem, and Rome. As Director of Campus Ministry at the St. John’s University Rome Campus, he led programs that brought students into direct contact with the religious, historical, and cultural life of the city.
